1944 display in the Supreme Court Library

Lt General Edmund Herring

This year marks 75 years since Lt General Edmund Herring was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria. To mark this occasion there is a small display in the Library about Herring and the Court in 1944.

On display in the Library is the minutes of the first Law Reform Committee meeting that was instigated by Herring, plus the story of the most famous case in 1944 - the Pyjama Girl.

The image is the 1945 Archibald prize winning portrait of Herring, from the collection of the Australian War Memorial. The Library holds the retirement portrait of Herring in his judicial robes done by the same artist, William Dargie, painted 20 years later.
