50 years since the Menhennitt ruling display in the Supreme Court Library

It is 50 years since Justice Menhennitt delivered his judgment in one of the best known cases of ‘Judge made law’. His decision provided the basis for legal abortions in Victoria for the next 40 years. As well as reflecting on the Menhennitt ruling, there is a little bit about the Court in the late 1960s. Did you know  that there was a proposal to demolish part of the Court and build an eight storey building on the eastern side of the building? Or that is wasn’t until the late 1960s that women jurors first sat on cases at the Victorian Supreme Court. An artist’s impression of the building proposal can be found on display as well as discussion about the arrival of women jurors.
