Authorised Reports Research Guide

An authorised report is one which has court approval prior to publication. The Consultative Council of Australasian Law Reporting (CCALR) video highlights the importance and value of authorised law reports.

Practice Note SC Gen 3 of the Supreme Court of Victoria specifies that "Where a judgment is reported in an authorised series of law reports, all references and citations must be to, and any copy provided to the Court must be a copy of, the authorised report".

The Australian Guide to Legal Citation (AGLC): Rule 2.2.2 states:

  • The authorised version of the report should always be used where available.

The Victorian Reports are the authorised law report series for Victoria. For more information about the Council of Law Reporting in Victoria, see this summary.
